Der starke Instinkt, sich in Sand oder Staub zu wälzen, ist ein typisches Merkmal der Chinchilla, das bei anderen heimischen Nagetieren nicht zu finden ist. Die Sandkörner halten das Fell durch die Aufnahme der Feuchtigkeit des Fells weich, weich und trocken.
