About Leonardo Cat Food
Leonardo is a German family business that has been making cat food since 1963. This company is known for its unique "thermal mixing" process, which uses steam pressure instead of mechanical friction to make dry foods. Leonardo says that this method is not only better for the ingredients but also for the environment.
Dr. Jürgen Wigger and his sister, Ulrike Petershagen, are the people who work for the company right now. The family business is now being run by the second generation. They keep the same family traditions and run the family business the same way as their ancestors did.
Sourcing And Manufacturing
Leonardo cat food is made by a team of nutritionists and veterinarians, but the brand's website doesn't say who they are. They do tell you a lot, though, about how their products are made.
Many commercial cat food companies make their dry food by extrusion, but Leonardo has come up with their own method, called the Thermal Mix Procedure.
As with traditional cat food, the process starts with mixing together the fresh ingredients. From there, it is gently steamed and shaped into bite-sized pieces without any mechanical friction. The food is then carefully dried twice, on the outside and on the inside, to keep it fresh without adding chemicals. Last, oil is used to add flavor to the food.
In a part of Germany called Münsterland, the company owns a factory where the cat food is made. Both their dry and wet foods are made with fresh meat from local sources.
Recall History
As far as we know, Leonardo has never had to recall a product. It's important to know that the FDA doesn't watch over pet food companies in Europe. They do have to follow the rules set by local governing bodies, like the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), which is the trade group for the European pet food industry.
What Kinds Of Cat Food Does Leonardo Offer?
Leonardo sells both wet and dry foods for cats. Their food is made to give cats more energy, keep them healthy, and help them live longer. They are based on a whole-body approach to nutrition.
Leonardo has both cans and pouches of moist food. They have recipes for both adult cats and kittens. All of them are made with high-quality animal proteins like beef, rabbit, and duck. The Drink line of food pouches with added water helps cats drink more water.
Leonardo dry foods are divided into three product lines:
-
Classic
-
Fresh Meat
-
Grain-Free
Leonardo offers traditional recipes for adult cat food, as well as recipes for kittens and "light" recipes to help cats stay at a healthy weight.
What Do Customers Think Of Leonardo Food?
I couldn't order food samples for myself because Leonardo is based in Germany. This makes it even more important to look at what other people have said about the brand. Again, though, it was hard for me to find reviews of their products that weren't written by them.
Customers can leave reviews on Leonardo's website, but, as you might expect, most of them are in German. I was able to translate some of them with the help of Google Translate.
"I really liked it." "With taurine and salmon oil, the high amount of meat is a good thing." Taking a look at Leonardo Adult Fish Dry Cat Food
"I mix it with Applaws chicken breast in broth, and there's never anything left." perfect for getting more fluids. It couldn't be better for you. All three of our cats think it's great. The salmon drink recipe is their favorite. – Reviewing Leonardo Drink Salmon
"Milka, my cat, really liked the food. She ran right to her bowl of food. The food looks good, has a good texture, and doesn't smell like other foods. The information that came with it was also good, and you were told what was in the food. "This was definitely not the last food I bought from Leonardo, and the next time I go to Fresnapf, it will be in my shopping cart." Taking a look at Leonardo Adult Fish Dry Cat Food
Comparable Brands
Overall, we’ve given Leonardo a B+ rating. This puts it on par with brands like American Journey and Fussie Cat in areas like species-appropriateness and ingredient quality. Leonardo offers a variety of wet and dry food options similar to popular brands like Wellness, though they do not offer single-protein recipes like you might find from Koha or Caru.
Overall, Is Leonardo Food A Good Choice?
It's hard to give a full review of a brand of cat food that isn't sold in the US, especially when the website is written in a language other than English. On the other hand, the UK version of the Leonardo website is pretty detailed, and I was able to learn enough about the brand as a whole even though I couldn't test the products.
The thing I like most about the Leonardo brand is that it is honest. Even though they don't say who comes up with their recipes, they give a lot of information about where and how they are made. I also like that they get their fresh meat from local sources.
The quality of the recipes and how well they fit the needs of different species vary. Most of the protein seemed to come from animals, but most of the recipes had plant-based ingredients that weren't needed.
All of the recipes I looked at had animal parts at the top of the list, but many of the names were not clear. But there's no reason to think that these aren't good ingredients. It could be that the rules for labeling pet food are different from those for labeling human food and don't require naming specific sources.
Overall, Leonardo might be a good choice for some cats, but it's hard to say how much it costs and where you can get it. Just based on the amount of carbs, I'd recommend their wet foods over their dry ones, but I'd like to know where their animal proteins come from.
Where Is Leonardo Food Sold?
Leonardo, like Applaws and Blink!, is a European company that makes cat food. I couldn't find out exactly where to buy Leonardo cat food because the website doesn't list any of the brand's distributors. Several customer reviews, on the other hand, indicate that the brand is sold in Italy at pet food stores like Fressnapf.
You might also be able to buy it from German online stores, but it doesn't look like Leonardo sells it directly through their website.
