The evolution of cats has been similar to that of predators, so their anatomy is structured for a substantially carnivorous diet. Despite the external differences in breed, dogs and cats are descended from their primordial ancestors, canids and felids, with whom they share the genetic code. So, just like their ancestors, our dogs and cats, although they have progressively adapted their digestive system to the prey they ate, prefer a carnivorous diet, which is why from the anatomical point of view they are endowed with: • sharp and pointed teeth to tear meat; • a maxillary joint that allows a wide mouth opening for the ingestion of large bites of meat; • a short digestive system with a simple structure with a highly acidic gastric pH suitable for digesting and metabolizing proteins, and therefore meat. Dogs and cats, on the other hand, have great difficulty in digesting complex cereals and carbohydrates, because they are lacking in specific enzymes capable of assimilating these substances.
