Osteoarthritis is the most common arthropathy in dogs.
It is characterized by mild inflammatory phenomena that lead to degenerative and progressive modifications of the joint structure and function.
The consequences are: inflammation of the synovial membrane, destruction of the cartilage matrix, formation of osteophytes, thickening of the joint capsule and remodeling of the subchondral bone.

The causes of Osteoarthritis can be congenital, such as hip dysplasia, or acquired as traumatic injury, obesity.
In congenital ones, normal forces are exerted on already diseased joints; in the acquired, abnormal pressure is exerted on healthy joints which are thus damaged.

Clinical symptoms of osteoarthritis are common regardless of the cause: cold lameness, stiff gait and pain in motion, joint swelling and crepitus, reduced or no mobility.

The treatment of Osteoarthritis has a multimodal approach, which in relation to the particular condition of the patient can include: weight reduction, controlled physical activity, anti-inflammatory drugs, glycosaminoglycans and Omega 3 essential fatty acids.
